Science is Fun

Mt. Loafer Elementary Fifth and Sixth grade students were delighted to have a visit from Steven Haderlie, a chemistry teacher at Springville High School and an adjunct BYU professor.  Mr. Haderlie is the grandfather of Madison Mantilla, a sixth grade student in Mr. Applegate's class.  Mr. Haderlie’s love of chemistry inspired him to become a high school teacher. “There’s something magical about the world, and chemistry really explains everything,” he said. “My philosophy for teaching chemistry is, chemistry is fun!”  Mt.

100 Days of School

Submitted by angela.killian on

Can you imagine what life in school was like a 100 years ago?  Many schools were small; often they had only one room. There was no running water and the heat came from a fireplace behind the teacher's desk. Windows were usually high so that the children could not see out and be distracted! Most of the work was done with chalk on a slate, because books and paper were very expensive.

The Past is a Blast!

Try telling a child what school used to be like in Mom and Dad’s (or even their grandparents’) day, and they’d never believe you! Well, we had an opportunity to provide a nostalgic trip. On Friday, January 27th, we had students come from the Wild West, soldiers from the Civil War, students with the laid back style of the 50's, leg warmers and big hair from the awesome 80's.  Although a lot has changed, one thing stays the same…school is a lot of fun!

Submitted by angela.killian on

It is an honor to pay tribute to Robyn Kerr with the Crystal Apple Award.  Robyn is a second grade teacher.  She is incredibly deserving of this award in so many ways.  Robyn is an incredible example to everyone.

Robyn is extremely organized. She also teaches her students how to be organized, which is a life skill they will all benefit from.  She is never satisfied with her own teaching.  She is always looking for a better or more exciting way to teach or to improve herself as a teacher.

Send those box tops to school...time for another Box Top competition!!  The class that collects the most box tops between January 9th through January 25th will get to choose either a movie with popcorn or hot chocolate and doughnuts.  Sounds yummy!!  Thank you, Mrs. Jennie Elder for heading this PTA assignment.   We appreciate all the parental support we have at Mt. Loafer, we couldn't hold school without you.

Happy Birthday Utah!

Submitted by angela.killian on

Utah was the 45th state in the USA; it became a state on January 4, 1896 and Mrs. Bradley's first grade celebrated Utah's birthday.

Her first grade students learned the geography of Utah.  They created a sugar cookie of Utah complete with the Colorado River, Green River, Great Salt Lake, Utah Lake, Bear Lake, and the mountain ranges.  They also inspected the state flag and learned what the  beehive, Sego Lily, and the Bald Eagle represent on the state flag.

Thank you Mrs. Bradley and Happy Birthday, Utah!
