Wanta' peek inside Miss Simmons first grade?  Her students are reading to partners because reading with someone else encourages students to try reading books that may be above their usual reading level, while also building oral skills so that students are more comfortable with their reading.  What great readers!

SHHS Soccer Comes To Second Grade To Read!

Submitted by larraine.nelson on

The Salem Hills Soccer Team came to Mt. Loafer and spent time with the second grade students, not playing soccer, but instead, reading books to the students!  The Skyhawk Kickers showed students their love for reading and let the students do a little reading themselves! We appreciate Coach Gillie and the soccer team for taking the time to show students how important it is to ALWAYS read!

Sight Words Are Out'ta Sight!

Submitted by angela.killian on

Mr. Jenkins understands that students in third grade make the shift from learning to read to reading to learn.  He also understands that there are some words students must know by sight.  If students have memorized the sight words then they have access to up to 75% of what is printed in almost any piece of children’s literature.  Take a peek as Mr. Jenkins provides a hands on way to help strengthen students' retention as they play Sight Word Bingo.

What's My Function?

Mrs. Gwynn helps her students become confident problem solvers! Take a look as she gives students practice in guessing the function.  Students alternate guessing a number.  The partner applies the rule and tells the output number.   What a great strategy to increase participation.

"The Prevailing Winds" is woodwind quintet that presents music spanning 300 years of musical history. Students enjoyed classic to popular music from films, such a Harry Potter and Star Wars.

Students learned many aspects of music, such as how it can convey emotion, and how it can enhance specific events. The program was educational, as well as entertaining.
